This is the same bayonet as an 1898 n/A Gewehr 98 bolt action rifle but made for Peru with the Peruvian Crest. This does NOT come with a scabbard. This is the newer model. The a/A (Older Model) had a single wrap around wood grip. This is a n/A (Newer Model) with two (2x) grip panels. This was the first bayonet produced for the Gewehr 98 with the new bayonet bar mounting system. These bayonets have a round spine and a blade that looks like a quill of a feather, thus the nickname "quillback". Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have oxidation and scrapes. The escutcheons securely fasten the panels to the tang. They have light tool marks and oxidation. The grip panels have light compressions and draglines. The serrations on the panels are slightly worn but mostly distinct. The wood has started to darken with age. The spine, fuller and blade have oxidation and scrapes. There are no nicks or dings and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The remaining finish is in the white with some scattered discoloration. The right ricasso is marked "SIMSON & CO. / SUHL" and the right side guard is marked with the serial number "13337". The back of the pommel has the Peruvian crest. The scabbard is NOT included. This bayonet will be a great addition to your Peruvian (and German) rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
