Description: WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT. Typed letter signed by “Wm. H. Taft” as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court to Franklin Henry Hooper, the U.S. editor for the Encyclopedia Britannica. Chief Justice Taft has no time to write an article on himself and the Supreme Court for the 13th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica; however, he recommends a close friend and dean at Indiana University Bloomington to write it instead: “I appreciate the compliment of the invitation to contribute a brief chapter for your new work, but my work on the Court is so exclusive that it would be impossible for me to do so. I am sure you can find some one who has the time and who has more intimate knowledge of the subject than I have. I should think you might get an article from Dean Hepburn, of the Indiana Law School, Bloomington, Indiana. He wrote a book on Code Pleading and has kept abreast of the times in this regard.”. TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT RECOMMENDING A CLOSE FRIEND AND DEAN AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON TO WRITE HIS BIOGRAPHY FOR ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA The letter is one page on “Supreme Court of the United States” letterhead, created in Washington, DC on July 4, 1923, measures 8.75” by 7”, in fine condition with minor toning, and beautifully matted and framed under UV glass with a photograph of Taft on IUB campus for the university’s 95th anniversary to an overall size of 11.75” by 9.25”. There are only a few correspondence letters in existence from U.S. Presidents with an association to Indiana University. All of these letters are currently housed at Indiana University’s Archives and Special Collections Departments with the exception of the present letter and one other example being the only ones believed to be in private hands.
