Waldorf Astoria 1956 Restaurant Menu, Peacock Alley, New York City, NY NYC

Description: This is an early restaurant menu from a mid-century collection: RESTAURANT: Peacock Alley, Waldorf Astoria, New York City, NY Peacock Alley is a legendary restaurant located within the iconic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The name "Peacock Alley" has historical significance, referring to a corridor in the original Waldorf Hotel (before it merged with the Astoria), where the city's elite would promenade in their finest attire, much like a parade of peacocks. The original Waldorf Hotel was opened in 1893 by William Waldorf Astor at the corner of 33rd Street and Fifth Avenue. When the Astoria Hotel was built adjacent to the Waldorf in 1897 by John Jacob Astor IV, the two hotels were connected by a grand hallway that became known as Peacock Alley. This opulent corridor was a place for New York's high society to be seen, creating a social buzz during the Gilded Age. In 1929, the original Waldorf-Astoria was demolished to make way for the construction of the Empire State Building, and the hotel moved to its present location on Park Avenue. In 1931, the new Waldorf Astoria Hotel opened, and Peacock Alley was revived as an elegant restaurant rather than a corridor, bringing back its legacy as a place for high society to gather and dine. Over the decades, Peacock Alley became synonymous with luxury dining in New York. The restaurant served a variety of gourmet dishes, with an emphasis on contemporary American cuisine. It was known for its sumptuous Sunday brunches, where guests could indulge in a lavish spread that included seafood, caviar, carving stations, and an array of desserts. Peacock Alley was more than just a restaurant; it was a gathering place for celebrities, politicians, and New York's elite. Over the years, it has hosted countless influential figures, including heads of state, actors, and prominent business leaders. The elegance and grandeur of the Waldorf Astoria made Peacock Alley an ideal setting for high-profile events, including galas and banquets. In 2017, the Waldorf Astoria closed for extensive renovations, and as part of its reopening, Peacock Alley is expected to return. The restaurant's legacy remains an important part of the Waldorf’s history and its role as a symbol of New York's sophisticated and luxurious lifestyle. Peacock Alley has always been a place where history, fine dining, and New York’s social scene converged, making it a beloved institution for more than a century.
