Description: Unique Metal Giftware by WENDELL AUGUST Vintage Wendell August Forge Aluminum Collector McConnell Mill Covered bridge Plate, Coaster, Decor, Handmade, Art, 1980s This was made by Wendell August Forge in Grove City, PA. Measures approximately 3.75 inches round.1. Using only hummer, chisel and their own creative talents, our master die engravers cut each design into 1" thick steel slab.2. During the hammering phase, the crafts-man pounds a series of random hammer marks into metal around the design area.3. At the each piece is "blackened" by holding it over an open fire, and allowing the smoke to bake onto it.4. Special buffers, 0000steel wool, and a gentle touch are used to remove 97% of the smoke residue from the item. Enough coloring is left to distinctively highlight the extraordinary detail of each design.5. The craftsman carefully hammers the metal into a wooden form to give the piece its final shape.Using centuries old techniques of European metal smiths, Wendell August pioneered giftware beginning in 1923.In the early years, efforts focused on ornate architectural items for banks, churches and private homes; presentation items were created in appreciation for these special clients. CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS:To recapture the original finish of aluminum or pewter, use No.0000 steel wool to remove a scuff or surface scratch. Rub with the grain. Then , with a very small drop of furniture wax on a soft cotton cloth, use a circular motion and polish to the desired sheen. The longer the metal is buffed , the greater the shine.Note: The surface of any Wendell August metal giftware can be damaged if used as an ashtray or put in the dishwasher.
