A photo that deserves a thousand words and more, this box cab was of American Locomotive / General Electric / Ingersoll Rand construction and was built in Phillipsburg, NJ in 1925. It is the first commercially successful diesel electric locomotive made and sold in the US. The CNJ needed this engine which it used at it's Bronx Terminal due to a new law in NYC banning the use of steam within city limits. It had 300 hp. It's small size and comparatively low operating expense was a perfect match and consequently several railroads jumped on the bandwagon in recognition of it's success. The CNJ retired the unit in 1957 and subsequently it went to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum.
