This sculpture is one of many done in the ancient world representing the Bithynian Greek youth , Antinous ( 111 - 130 ) , Roman Emperor Hadrians favorite lover , who drowned in the Nile River at the age of 19 - the average life expectancy of a male in 1st century Rome was 28. Hadrian was profoundly grief stricken and proclaimed Antinous a Roman god founding series of cities named after the young man. The bust is a classic of the ancient world and has been reproduced widely throughout the millennia since. The bust sits on a waisted circular socle base ( of the same material as the bust ) , which in turn sits on a glossy black slab/base. The sculptor/mold maker , Domenico Brucciani was born in Italy and moved to London where he opened a plaster casting workshop in the late 1830's in Covent Garden. There was a contingent of Italian sculptors and mold makers operating in London and other cities in England who would very carefully and meticulously make casting molds of the great sculptural works in British museums. This piece is a descendant of those castings and is an absolutely true reproduction of the original in every respect. Elegant and classic it's a fine addition to any room.
