Description: Three Young Rats by Alexander Calder First edition, presentation copy signed by the sculptor to Lota de Macedo Soares New York: Curt Valentin, 1944. First edition, one of 700 copies in the trade issue. Signed by Alexander Calder on the front free endpaper and inscribed, "A lotta love / to Lota / Sandy Calder / 23 October 1948." Sandy was the sculptor's nickname. The inscribee was Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares (1910-1967) who was the long-time lover of poet Elizabeth Bishop. Bishop and Soares would visit the Calders quite often in Brazil and owned at least one Calder mobile sculpture. xxii, 136 pp. Bound in publisher's tan buckram cloth over yellow paper boards lettered and illustrated in red; lacking the dust jacket. Very Good with slight rubbing to spine lettering, moderate wear at extremities with toning and soiling to covers. Light scattered foxing to contents. A very personal presentation copy of the sculptor's slightly menacing and distinctively wiry illustrated version of Mother Goose and classic nursery rhymes.
