Description: SPINY SEA URCHIN (Stamile,P) 2004 TET 1492-A [(Shimmering Elegance x Ed Brown) X Magic Lake] 27” EMRe. fr. emo. SEv. 5½” x 2¾” x 2”. 4-way branching. 20-25 buds. Ouch!! This daylily has “spines” all along the outer edge of the daylily. These spines seem to prick at people’s hearts as well. This one is always a visitor favorite. A beautiful lavender bi-tone that opens well and flat despite the elaborate structural gold chartreuse edging. The flower also has a shadowed mauve eye that is more prominent very early in the season. Like sharks teeth spiny edges seem to be controlled by a temperature dependent recessive modifier gene. Unlike sharks teeth these spiny teeth seem to be less heat dependent and appear much earlier in the season. At times the edging can appear almost citron green in color. MAGIC LAKE, the pollen parent itself, is becoming an important parent for green edges for other hybridizers and myself. SPINY SEA URCHIN has one flaw. The scapes bloom at the top of the leaves. This is very common among gold edged daylilies. Nevertheless, I consider it a serious flaw. This has not deterred anyone and there is a long waiting list for this one from visitors in the garden.
