A great ethnologist, naturalist, and humanitarian best known for his extensive work with the Bambuti pygmies of the Ituri Rainforest and for his studies and care of wildlife in Africa. He wrote the 1967 book Animal Kitabu, which details his extraordinary collection of animals in the Congo and in Kenya, as well as the 1964 autobiographical book, Congo Kitabu and the 1973 ethnologic book Pygmy Kitabu. He also produced many significant documentaries and films about the "dark continent" and was awarded many international awards and recognition for his work with wildlife in Africa.
