One of the most successful examples of French origin was the 155-mm gun GPF (Grand Puissance Filoux), designed in 1917. French-made guns in the service of the US Army were standardized as M1917. Subsequently, the release of such systems with some changes, in particular, the design of the shutter, was established in the United States - such guns were designated M1918M1. For all its advantages, the GPF was a rather difficult art system — not surprisingly, it was one of the first "candidates" for the self-propelled version. As early as 1918, the Americans made ten Gun Motor Carriage Mk.II self-propelled guns ("motorized gun carriage"), which were an artillery part of the M1917 gun mounted on the unarmored chassis of a Holt crawler tractor. These ACS did not take part in the battles, but in the first postwar years work on their improvement continued, and in 1925 a modernized version of the Gun Motor Carriage Mk.IX was tested. Motorization of American artillery seemed to be inevitable, as the Westervelt Commission, which studied the results of the use of artillery in World War I, recommended "motorizing" artillery units armed with cannons larger than 75 mm and howitzers 4 inches and larger. . At the same time, the question of what motorization should consist of - the introduction of mechanical traction or the adoption of self-propelled guns - was left unambiguous. But it was noted that guns with a caliber of 155 mm and above must be able to move at a speed of at least 10 km / h by crawling (or by towing crawler tractors) and at least 20 km / h by wheel (or by towing wheeled tractors). The findings of the Westervelt Commissions were many years ahead of time and, as is often the case, were not appreciated by contemporaries. The field artillery command did not support the idea of motorization. Only in the second half of the 1930's did the field artillery command soften its position and agree to the introduction of mechanical traction. There could still be no talk of self-propelled guns. Only the beginning of the war in Europe and the experience of the "blitzkrieg" in Poland and France clearly showed the importance of mobile troops. As a result, when in the second half of 1940 a fairly successful medium tank M3 was created, its chassis was decided to be used to increase the mobility of 155-mm guns. The self-propelled project was designated Gun Motor Carriage T6. In June 1941, the Department of Defense's Armaments Department ordered a T6 prototype from the Rock Island Arsenal. Its construction was completed in February next year, after which the prototype was sent for testing at the Aberdeen test site.Payment Policy We accept only PayPal Shipping Policy We ship WORLDWIDE.We will ship your purchase to your eBay address using AIRMAIL with TRACKING NUMBER.
