Description: RPPC WWI Franked mid-April 1915 -- Damaged Church at Passchendaele, Flanders, Belgium.Cancel mark shows origin from the XXVI Reserve Army Corps, a German unit formed in 1914; the addressee appears to be (acc to Google Lens, "Cannoneer Richard Sauerman & spare battery. Regiment No. 5, Fosen (sic?)" -- can't make out further details in the script. Also according to Google, the text of the message may be Norwegian, which may make sense because there's a town called Fosen in Norway. YMMV. The village of Passchendaele (now Passendale) and its surrounding area were involved in every phase of World War I. In the First Battle of Passchendaele, 1914, the village was briefly under Allied control, but by October 20, it was in German hands -- for the next three years. The town was the site of the first use of poison gas by German forces, and of 2 more major battles, which resulted in nearly 1/2 million casualties on both sides. FAIR condition: a harsh crease just above the middle, lower left and upper right corners creased.
