Description: Shield of the Royal ArmsUK Definitive Coins 2008 to PresentIn 2008 the definitive coinage of the UK was changed completely for the first time since decimalisation in 1969/70 with the introduction of a completely new design based upon the Shield of Royal Arms.A clever new design was selected from more than 4,000 entries to an open competition run by the Royal Mint. In his winning entry, graphic designer Matthew Dent took as his inspiration the Shield of the Royal Arms and used this to show elements of the design spread across coins from one penny to fifty pence so the full design can be glimpsed in its entirety when the coins are arranged together in the correct format. The complete Royal Arms design was also shown on the new definitive one pound coin released to complete the definitive coinage set for that year.This listing is for shield sets made from coins rescued from circulation. A full shield was issued into circulation in 2008 (its year of initial release) followed by 2012, 2013, 2014 and two varieties were issued in 2015, when a full design was released at the start of the year bearing the fourth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth (engraved by Ian Rank Broadley), while sets released later in the year carried Jody Clark's fifth portrait of the the Queen. The full Royal Arms was not released into circulation in the intervening years as no definitive 50 pence coins were distributed in 2009, 10 and 11 except through uncirculated and proof annual sets (ironically making the otherwise "ordinary" definitive shield 50p in an annual set from 2009 far rarer than the more valued Kew Gardens 50p alongside it!)The creation of the new definitive sets also gave a simple new introduction into numismatic collecting for people in the UK as it was initially easy to assemble each year's shield from change however, as the years have passed, it has become harder to put together these groups.Over the past decade I have sold dozens of Royal Shield sets to collectors all over the world, including many in the UK who have sometimes bought a set simply for one of the six coins in the shield to help them complete a date run of one of the denominations involved.Rather than continue to run multiple listings for the various years the shields were issued, I decided to put these all together for a fixed joint listing in which I will offer those years for which I am able to offer complete shields and also (for those keen to pick up coins for their date runs, etc.) incomplete sets from years when 50p coins were not released into general circulation.This listing offers most UK definitive coins released into circulation since the introduction of Matthew Dent's eye-catching new design was adopted as the new standard for UK coinage. All coins offered have been rescued from general circulation before this made too much of an impact on their surfaces. This means that for some years there will not be the full six-coin set; for example, the 2019 set includes only the 50p and 20p definitive coins released by the Mint and for the 2018 definitive set, none were released into circulation so all I have available is a single unreleased penny in a tiny case.
