ROSCOE ATES - AUTOGRAPHED INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH 1936 - HFSID 292133 ROSCO ATES The veteran character actor is shown in character from the 1936 comedy Fair Exchange, inscribed with his trademark stutter to collector Doc Salomon Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Doc,/BBBBBest Wishes always,/Rosco Ates/1936/Fair Exchange Nutz". B/w, 8x10. Rosco Ates (1895-1962) was a concert violinist before turning vaudeville comedian. He became a prolific character actor, often adding humor to Western films starring Johnny Mack Brown, Eddie Dean and others. He revived a youthful stutter for comic effect, imitated in his inscription here. From 1946 to 1948, he starred as Soapy Jones in 15 movies. He appeared frequently on TV, mostly in Westerns, until shortly before his death. He made multiple appearances on such series as Lawman, Maverick and also Alfred Hitchcock Presents. A. M. "Doc" Salomon, a friend of studio mogul Jack Warner, who rose to head the London branch of Warner Bros. studios, compiled an extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio. A V-1 rocket demolished his London studio in July 1944 and killed Salomon, but his photo collection miraculously survived. Heavy mounting residue on verso. Pin size holes at corners. Corners creased and worn. Stain at center bottom edge. Surface scratches seen head on. Otherwise, fine condition.
