The Meaders family has been influential in preserving traditional pottery techniques, and Clete continues this legacy by creating unique pieces, including the iconic face jugs. Clete Meaders is part of the famous Meaders family of potters from White County, Georgia. While he currently resides in Hoschton, Georgia, his family’s pottery tradition is deeply rooted in Cleveland, Georgia. Clete is dedicated to the traditional process of making pottery, from digging his own clay, to firing his pieces in a wood kiln. His work is celebrated for its craftsmanship and adherence to the folk pottery traditions of North Georgia. The Meaders family’s pottery tradition began with John Milton Meaders, who founded the first Meaders Pottery in the winter of 1892-93. Initially, pottery was a supplementary income to farming, but it quickly became a significant family trade. The Meaders family is renowned for their distinctive “face jugs,” which have become highly collectible. Today, John Milton Meaders’ great grandson Clete Meaders, of Cleveland, GA, is dedicated to preserving the traditional process of making folk pottery, from digging his own clay to firing his face jugs in a wood kiln. Indeed, Cleveland holds an annual Meaders Pottery Face Jug Festival to recognize the more than century old contribution of this one North Georgia family.
