This medal is 1.5 inches long with bale (1.25 without bail) and it weighs 9 grams of bronze. Saint Anastasius of Persia (whose given name was Magundat), was originally a Zoroastrian soldier in the Sasanian army who later became a convert to Christianity. He was baptized by Modestus, receiving the Christian name Anastasius to honor the resurrection of Jesus Christ ("AnĂ¡stasis" in Greek). After seven years of monastic observance, he was moved by the Holy Ghost to go in quest of martyrdom and went to Caesarea, then subject to the Sasanians. There he interrupted and ridiculed the Zoroastrian priests for their religion and was as a result arrested by the local marzban, taken prisoner, cruelly tortured, was strangled to death and decapitated on January 22, 628. His body, which was thrown to the dogs, but was left untouched by them, was carried from there to Palestine, afterwards to Constantinople, and finally to Rome. Bernard of Vienne was born to the French nobility. Military officer in the army of Blessed Charlemagne. Upon the death of his parents, he retired from the military, divided his property into three parts (one for the Church, one for the poor, one for his children), bought the monastery in Ambronay, and retired there. Abbot at Ambronay in 805. Archbishop of Vienne, France in 810; Bernard resisted the appointment but accepted after being ordered to do so by Charlemagne and Pope Saint Leo III. Worked to unite the Church in France and the East, trying to overcome their differences in the use and attitude to images. He became embroiled in the political division of lands in France, was ordered deposed by the winning side, and retired from public life to concentrate on the pastoral duties of his see. The town of Romans grew up around the place where he used to go for solitude. This medals 18th century dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 of the book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published by NUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.In addition, this book has chapters (outlined in the table of contents), describing each of the categories of medals, their possible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where they were made. We recommend that anyone serious about collecting medals from this period acquire a copy of this book. Thanks for your kind support in our work!
