Description: Description: RARE 1899 Admiral Dewey Washington Reception Committee Bronze Medal 38mm 1899 bronze medal issued by Dewey's Washington Reception Committee likely composed of dignitaries, veterans, politicians, etc. celebrating his historic victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Obverse features right-facing bust of Dewey in his regalia, likely referencing the famous portrait of him published in The World's Great Classics and engraved by Hanson of Chicago. Reverse reads, "altera merces," meaning a second reward in Latin with an upright axe in a laurel cartouche. Below is engraved, "Admiral Dewey Reception Committee, Washington, October MDCCCXCIX," and is attributed at base to McClain Brothers & Co. of Chicago. George Dewey (1837-1917) was an Admiral of the U.S. Navy and remains the only individual to have achieved the rank. He is third to only George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the amount of numismatics created in his honor. Dewey became a national icon after he led an attack on Manila Bay, sinking the entire Spanish Pacific fleet while suffering only minor casualties. Dewey's victory at Manila Bay was widely lauded in the United States, and he was subsequently promoted to Admiral of the Navy and celebrated through the production of various medals, tokens, and ephemera.
