Description: Campbell, Ramsey. THE FACE THAT MUST DIE. Santa Cruz, CA: 1983. 1st U.S. (and 1st hardcover) edition. This Scream Press hardcover issue was preceded by a British paperback issue. With “FIRST EDITION, October 1983” printed on the copyright page, which indicates that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing. Illustrated by J.K. Potter. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Signed in full by the legendary horror author Ramsey Campbell and by the legendary horror artist J.K. Potter on the half-title page. Buyer beware: There was a later printing of THE FACE THAT MUST DIE that was published in this exact hardcover format. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing. ___________________________________________________________________ Arkham House, Dark Harvest, and Scream Press were probably the three most important small presses that published dark fantasy and horror fiction during the important explosion of those genres during the 1980's. ___________________________________________________________________ SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Ramsey Campbell was born in 1946 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. He is mainly known as an English horror and dark fantasy fiction author. Campbell was attracted early in his life to the field of “weird” fiction. He avidly consumed the work of Lovecraft, Bierce, Kafka, and the cinema of film noir. Campbell first encountered the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft at age eight via the story “The Colour Our of Space.” Campbell wrote many short stories and was finally published in the Arkham House anthology DARK MIND, DARK HEART, edited by August Derleth. The story was entitled “The Church in High Street.” Derleth, one of the co-founders of Arkham House and a member of the Lovecraft inner circle, gave Campbell invaluable advice over the years that they knew each other. Campbell’s first book was a collection of stories, THE INHABITANT OF THE LAKE AND LESS WELCOME TENANTS (an Arkham House publication), which has become very collectible. His second book was entitled DEMONS BY DAYLIGHT (also an Arkham House book). The great horror editor and author, T.E.D. Klein writes that “Campbell reigns supreme in the field today.” Robert Hadji describes Campbell as “perhaps the finest living exponent of the British weird fiction tradition.” S.T. Joshi, the great Lovecraft historian and Lovecraft expert writes that “future generations will regard Campbell as the leading horror writer of our generation, every bit the equal of Lovecraft or Blackwood.” Ramsey Campbell is the Lifetime President of the British Fantasy Society. Ramsey Campbell is the author of such great and famous books as THE DOLL WHO ATE HIS MOTHER (Campbell’s first novel), THE FACE THAT MUST DIE (a Scream Press book; offered here), THE PARASITE (published in the U.S. with a different ending as TO WAKE THE DEAD), THE NAMELESS, THE CLAW, INCARNATE, OBSESSION, THE HUNGRY MOON, THE INFLUENCE, ANCIENT IMAGES, MIDNIGHT SUN, THE COUNT OF ELEVEN, THE INHABITANTS OF THE LAKE AND LESS WELCOME TENANTS (an Arkham House book and Campbell’s first book), DEMONS BY DAYLIGHT (an Arkham House book), THE HEIGHT OF THE SCREAM (an Arkham House book), DARK COMPANIONS, SCARED STIFF: TALES OF SEX AND DEATH, and many, many others. Signed in full by the legendary horror author Ramsey Campbell and by the legendary horror artist J.K. Potter on the half-title page. From the dust jacket flap: “ . . . Ramsey Campbell’s THE FACE THAT MUST DIE . . . Illustrated by J.K. Potter . . . Too strong for the New York publishing establishment, Scream/Press proudly presents this horrifying novel of murderous paranoia. The first hardcover printing restores previously edited material -- including a deleted chapter -- as well as featuring a long, autobiographical introduction written expressly for this edition. Also included is the previously unpublished short story ‘I Am It And It Is Me’ . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “At once beautiful, shocking, and thoroughly terrifying. We see and hear, we smell and feel the acid stench and spider touch of fear. An outstanding writer!” -- Fritz Leiber. “Campbell is literate in a field which has attracted too many comic-book intellects, cool in a field where too many writers -- myself included -- tend toward panting melodrama, fluid in a field prey to cant and stupid ‘rules’ of fantasy composition.” -- Stephen King in DANSE MACABRE. From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “Ramsey Campbell’s first published story was in 1962. He turned to writing full time in 1973, following the release of his second short story collection, DEMONS BY DAYLIGHT. Since then he has produced two more collections, edited three others, and released five novels. In 1977 Campbell received the British Fantasy Award for the story ‘In The Bag’ and the World Fantasy Award for ‘The Chimney.’ “ Signed in full by the legendary horror author Ramsey Campbell and by the legendary horror artist J.K. Clearly, Ramsey Campbell is one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible dark fantasy and horror authors in the world. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black full-cloth binding with bright red lettering on the spine of the book. There is an embossed skull and crossed razors on the front cloth of the book. The book has the correct red and white J.K. Potter endpapers. There is no writing in the book (except for Ramsey Campbell’s and J.K. Potter’s autographs); no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $15.95. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. This is probably an unread copy of this book. J.K. Potter is one of the best, most famous, most outlandish, and most collectible science fiction, fantasy, and horror illustrators in the world. Signed in full by the legendary horror author Ramsey Campbell and by the legendary horror artist J.K. Potter on the half-title page. It is hard to imagine that there is a nicer 1st edition copy of THE FACE THAT MUST DIE than this copy; a wonderfully collectible copy of a great horror novel. I use the EBAY shipping system to send out the majority of the books that I sell. Insurance is included in the shipping charges for this book that the buyer will be paying. One would assume that the buyer would want to insure this book for its correct value. A must for the collector of modern horror fiction 1st editions and/or the collector of Ramsey Campbell 1st editions. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win. Shipping: $4.00 for USPS Media Mail shipping. $10.00 for USPS Priority Mail shipping. Buyers who wish to have packages sent to addresses outside of the U.S. are required to pay for the postage necessary to send such packages. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won't guarantee their books, doesn't have a return policy, or doesn't correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
