There always seemed to be a problem with them. Some weigh a ton, which is nice when it is on my desk at home, but a real pain if I want to take it anywhere. Then what if I need to take several, I need a U-Haul! Some of them weigh less, but you lose functionality. Some just slide across my desk like an ice skate. Then there are those that only fit a couple of my radios. I decided to fix that problem! This radio stand is designed to be functional, light weight, small enough to take anywhere, and the right size for all my radios. When putting it together I wanted it to be a little over engineered, using top quality materials and yet be very affordable. Making one stand do all of that was a tough job but I think I came away with a winner. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BLUE STAND IN THE PICTURES IS FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY, THE ACTUAL PRODUCT IS BLACK. Blue is just a LOT easier to see details on. Functional First and foremost the stand had to do what it was originally mean to do, hold a handheld radio on my desk. It does that quite well. In fact, it can hold any of my primary radios at almost any angle I could ever want. It has a heavy duty rubber surface on the part that contacts the back of the radio to prevent damage and keep it from slipping. It also helps stop vibrations from the radio's speaker from traveling through the desk. I attached this heavy rubber material using Gorilla brand Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive to make sure it stays put. The bottom of the stand has four silicone rubber feet which also help keep the sound from vibrating through my desk, but they are mainly there to keep the stand from sliding. They are glued to the stand using 3M heavy duty adhesive tape so they should be there for a really long time. To adjust the angle, all you do is losen the wing nut of the oversized bolt (I used a 2 1/2" long 1/4"x20 bolt to make sure it had serious grip) and change the angle to whatever you want, from 90 degrees straight up (you may need a weight on the back of the stand to hold a radio at this angle), all the way down to below zero degrees, and then tighten the wing nut back down. Light Weight The whole stand weighs in at 2oz or 55g. This is fantastic when you want to carry one, or more, of these on a trip, to a meeting, or to field day. Need to stick one, or ten, into your backpack? No problem! You can even stick one in your shirt pocket without it trying to rip your pocket off your chest. It is so light weight that I can pick up my radio with the stand still on it and reply to a call on the radio. I don't even notice the extra weight when doing this and it makes it super convenient as I do not have to fiddle with trying to get the radio off the stand, and more importantly, back on it. Small Enough I really wanted this thing to be small, and it is. The width is wide enough to make sure the back of my radios are well supported and no wider. It folds almost flat. This means not only is it great to fold flat and throw into the back of a desk drawer when not in use, but it literally fits into a shirt or pants pocket with ease. Try that with one of those heavy metal desk stands! Folding down this small also makes it perfect to carry anywhere, even places you would have never carried that big old metal stand. Need to hop on a plane for a vacation or business trip? Throw one in your carry on, or just slide it in your pocket! The Right Size There are so many radios out there that no matter what you do, there is a radio that will not fit a desk stand. Look at radios like the old Realistic HTX models or the Kenwood TH-215, none of those "fit" any radio stand I have ever had, including the big name metal ones. They don't fit this one either, not even a little. What does fit? Glad you asked! I have a very understanding wife so I have radios from little FRS radios like the Midland GTX and Motorola T600s, through Baofeng UV-5R and UV-HP82s, to newer and higher-end radios like my Yaesu FT3DR, Kenwood TH-D74A, and ICOM ID-52A. They all fit! While I can not possibly test every radio out there, I can tell you that each and every radio I typically use fits and works well. Included in the above image are the following in no particular order: Yaesu FT-65, Alinco DJ-MD5, Kenwood TH-D74, Yaesu FT3D, Arcshell AR-6, ICOM ID-52A, Alinco DJ-G7 (custom clip which I also sell!), Midland GTX, Yaesu FT-270, Baofeng UV-5R, and my Yaesu VX-8G. Yes, I own both a Realistic HTX-404 and a Kenwood TH-215a and neither fit on the stand. That's OK, they are bricks and stand on my desk by themselves. When the cat rubs on them, they knock the cat off the desk ;-) Not really, but you get the picture. Special Abilities This stand even has some special abilities! The first is one I use pretty frequently, the ability to hang off of a computer monitor or smaller TV screen. Sometimes I am somewhere and have no real desk space, but there is a computer monitor. The desk is full of clipboards, logbooks, and pizza boxes. When this happens, I can open the Radio Stand Lite to about 45 degrees, hang it over the right corner of the monitor with the bottom facing me, and hang my radio using the belt clip. This works just awesome! You can easily monitor a channel for an event with the screen at eye level. Using the Radio Stand Lite hanging from the monitor got me thinking, how else could I use this feature? Then I realized you could do the exact same thing with a shelf. Since the stand stops at 90 derees you can open it all of the way, tighten it, then place the part that the radio normally sits on on a shelf, place something on it to hold it, then attach the belt clip of the radio just like you did over the monitor. I wound up using this at my desk which has a bookshelf on my left side. I can use the books to hold the stand and have the radio right there without taking up any desk space or hanging off my monitor. I never thought of this until I was building this stand but it is incredibly useful. Top Quality Components All the 3D printed parts I sell are the same designs I use, and I don't like cheap junk. I use higher-end components to make sure everything works well, and lasts. The rubber mat I use is designed for professional tool drawer liners, such as for a mechanic. It will last a long time and put up with serious abuse, hopefully far more than you are going to give it with your radio. Designed to deal with oil, grease, as well as many other harsh chemicals while remaining fairly grippy to keep tools (and radios, heh) from sliding around. The rubber surface also protects the back of your radio so it is highly unlikely it will get damaged from using the stand. I attach the rubber mat material to the plastic plate using Gorilla Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive, coating both items to make sure they form a permanent moisture resistant bond that should last forever. The silicone pads on the bottom of the stand are a fairly heavy duty and slip resistant rubber compound designed for impacts and slip resistance. They are attached to the plastic bottom using 3M branded double-sided adhesive like they use for attaching certain parts to cars (spoilers, those plastic antennas, etc). The bolt and wingnut are simple zinc, but they are massively oversized for this project to make sure there is no chance that they will pull through the plastic, or not provide enough grip. When choosing a plastic I picked a good plastic for the task, not the cheap Chinese stuff. It is strong without being brittle, flexible without sacrificing strength, and very durable. It costs about twice as much as regular plastic for my printer, but it is worth it. Reviewing why this might be the right stand for you Excellent desk stand Works with a wide range of radios Light weight at about 2oz Small size, folds to about 4.5" x 2.5" x 1.25" Easy to store and carry Also works as a monitor or shelf stand Top quality components This is a custom 3D printed item and so will not be as slick and polished as something that comes out of a factory. You can expect a slightly rough surface on the plastic and small cosmetic imperfections overall. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BLUE STAND IN THE PICTURES IS FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY, THE ACTUAL PRODUCT IS BLACK.
