Description: Pair of J F Herring Snr Hunting Lithographs by Vincent Brooks Jan 9th 1854. A very rare opportunity to purchase a pair of lithographs produced in the lifetime of John Frederick Herring Senior. The lithographs are signed bottom right in the print by Vincent Brooks. The bottom title which is under the mount says, London January 9th 1854 Lloyd Brothers and Co 96 Gracechurch Street London. Before that Lloyd brothers were operating out of 27 Ludgate Hill, London from 1849-1856. However according to the British museum Lloyd Brothers were still at Ludgate Hill when this print was produced. Vincent Brooks established his company in 1848 and added Day and Son after he purchased certain rights when the company folded.Vincent wound up his company in 1940 These two lithographs are historic. They are framed, mounted and glazed. John Herring Senior was one of the greatest British artists of the 19th C and is regarded in the same category as Sir Edwin Henry Landseer. Here we have two hunting scenes. The meet and then the kill. It demonstrates clearly the gentleman barbarity of hunting, but at this time, a perfectly acceptable social activity. Each print is framed the same. In landscape they measure 23” x 15”. The image within the cream mount measures 12.25” x 6.75” Each weighs 2.2 kg There is some slight foxing around the edges of the “Kill” print and also a stain mark in the centre. Fortunately, this mark appears to be a part of the background. The “Meet” print appears fine. Because of this I am offering them at a reduced price. Sent together they will require substantial packagingFarnaby Trading, is committed to bringing you great value for money gifts, antiques and collectables.
