OUR PRICE FOR THIS POSTER AND MAGAZINE IS $249 What a difference a few years made: In late 2014 then-United States President Barack Obama reestablished diplomatic relations with Cuba, and in March 2016 he actually visited the island on an official state visit. It was the first visit by a U.S. president to Cuba in almost 90 years. Yet only a few years earlier, in 2010, a propaganda poster was created in Havana to mock Obama for winning the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. An image of the poster was also printed on the cover of the Cuban solidarity magazine TRICONTINENTAL. Here's your chance to own both the magazine and the original Cuban poster -- a rarely seen graphic on glossy paper titled PREMIO NOBEL DE LA PAZ (Nobel Peace Prize). The Cuban designer of the posters and magazine cover, Rafael Enriquez (presumably with an assist from Photoshop), shows Barack Obama at a podium holding a gold coin engraved with a dollar sign. A menacing American Eagle hovers over the U.S. president. The poster, as well as article in the magazine, argue that Obama did not deserve the coveted Nobel Peace Prize because of the United States' involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East, Columbia, Yemen, Pakistan and other areas of the world. A reference also was made to the long-standing United States' embargo (the Cubans call it a blockade) against Cuba. All in all, this is a remarkable Cold War-style propaganda poster that was published in the 21st century! The edgy 13-by19-inch offset poster was designed by veteran Cuban artist Rafael Enriquez for the Havana-based Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America (OSPAAAL), which was based in Havana. Enriquez's political posters have been reproduced in many prominent graphic arts books and exhibited in gallery and museum shows worldwide. As mentioned, in addition to the poster, you will also receive a hard-to-find copy of the 2010 edition of TRICONTINENTAL magazine that featured the OBAMA poster on the cover. In addition to articles on Obama, the magazine also has commentaries (in Spanish) on Yemen, Haiti, Honduras and Afghanistan, among other topics. The magazine measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches. OSPAAAL, the Havana organization that printed both the poster and magazine, closed its doors in June 2019 after a long run as a publisher of imaginative Cuban poster art. OSPAAAL posters can be found in museum and gallery collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., as well as in numerous books about Cuban graphic art.
