Description: Original large-format 1848 blueback nautical chart of the eastern coast of the United States from Rhode Island to western Cuba, including the entire peninsula of Florida, published by E. & G.W. Blunt. North is oriented to the right, and the map has incredible coastal detail of the Florida Keys, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Chesapeake & Delaware Bays, and Long Island. The coverage area extends upstream of several of the larger rivers to include the cities of Richmond, Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. There are nine inset charts of various harbors and areas including a highly detailed plan of New York Harbor, another of the coast between Long Beach Island and Cape May in New Jersey, several of areas on the Outer Banks and South Carolina coast, and a large harbor chart and street plan of Havana. There are numerous depth soundings, along with the location of shoals, anchorages, current directions, and ground types. Lighthouses are identified with red and yellow hand color. The map is titled: Coast Of North America from Point Judith to Cape St. Antonio. (Island Of Cuba) Including the Bahama Banks...Every Authentic Survey, American, English & Spanish, Has Been Used in the Construction of this Chart. It was drawn and engraved by Charles Copley, and it was published in 1848 by Edmund and George William Blunt, the foremost producers of charts, pilot guides, and instruments in the United States throughout the first half of the 19th century. The overall size of this map is 76.2 x 337 cm [30" x 132½"], or more than eleven feet wide. It is backed by heavy blue paper, and the edges have neatly-stitched linen trim, features which allowed the chart to be handled and used during a sea voyage and rolled up for storage aboard ship. Condition: It is in very good condition, with signs of use from having served as a working nautical chart aboard a ship more than 150 years ago, including a few water stains, scuffs, a small hole, pencil notations, and a hand-stitched repair to an edge tear. Please see the scans, which include a view of the chart on exhibit at the Miami Map Fair, and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. Early blueback charts are scarce on the market, and this map from 1848 is not only impressive in its extraordinary detail and generous size but also in its rarity. We are pleased to offer it for your consideration. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
