While just over 1,000 G 8 locomotives had been built, the G 8.1 was a success like hardly any other locomotive before it. 4934 locomotives were delivered to the Royal Prussian Railway Administration (KPEV) and finally to the German Reichsbahn Company (DRG). 10 locomotives went to the Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway (MFF) and 137 to the Alsace-Lorraine Reichseisenbahnen. By 1922, Linke-Hofmann had delivered 50 locomotives to the Polish State Railways. In addition, other machines were sent abroad, including to the Baghdad Railway, to Lithuania and to Romania. The G 8.1 class was a major pillar in the rolling stock of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Even after 1945, there were NOCH over 1,000 locomotives in use, NOCH in both parts of Germany.
