There is no torn or missing pages nor writing -- the dustjacket is missing ........book has slight slant (see photos) Montgomery Clift was one of the greatest actors of his time. He appeared in 17 movies from 1948 through 1966. Best known for From Here to Eternity, A Place in the Sun and I Confess, he was nominated for four Oscars, but never won. Clift was arrogant as an actor, always seemingly knowing how every part should be played. A friend once described him as “a pathological idealist.” Clift was an enigmatic figure. He was extraordinarily sensitive, vulnerable and humble, traits seldom present in leading men of his day. Additionally, he was sexually conflicted. He was a homosexual, but never admitted it, or truly accepted it. A former male love said, “Monty was capable of an erotic relationship with either sex.” And, men and women were easily attracted to him. He and co-star Elizabeth Taylor had a touching and extraordinarily close relationship. They probably would have gotten married, if not for Clift’s homosexuality. A near fatal car crash, leaving a party at Taylor’s home in 1956, left Clift with multiple injuries and disfigured his face. The accident began the “longest, slowest suicide in Hollywood.” In constant pain, Clift increased his use of alcohol and prescription drugs. In his later years, Clift became severely depressed, acted strangely, had trouble remembering his lines and was viewed as undependable by the film industry. In the final four years of his life, he made one bad movie (The Defector). He sank deeper into a dark and pathetic life. Clift died in 1966 at age 45.
