The map covers the area between the Strait of Hormuz and the Philippine Islands, including Mongolia, the Maldive Islands, Tibet, China, India, the Gobi Desert, and the South China Sea. Zheng He, identifed in the map legend as Cheng Ho, was a Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat, fleet admiral, and court eunuch during China's early Ming dynasty.
