Author Biography Harry Allard (1928-2017) was the author of many hilarious books for children, including several Miss Nelson and Stupid Family titles, all illustrated by James Marshall.James Marshall (1942-1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious childrens books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a masters degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his lifes work as one of the finest creators of childrens books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Childrens Literature Legacy Award for his lasting contribution to literature for children. Kirkus US Review The kids in 207 "were the worst-behaved class in the whole school," even during story hour - a deadly sin. After a surfeit of spitballs, their sweet and permissive teacher, Miss Nelson, reappears disguised as Miss Viola Swamp, and loads them down with homework, forces them to behave, and cuts out story time. The vacuous Detective McSmogg is no help with the disappearance, and the children propose a shark attack or a trip to Mars to explain it. . . "or maybe Miss Nelsons car was carried off by a swarm of angry butterflies." Miss Nelson "returns" - minus wig, ugly dress, false nose - to find the class remarkably changed. The message is clear, the plot predictable, but theres fun in the telling and Marshalls "stupid," innocent, funny-ugly characters.
