Bio:José Luis Cuevas (February 26, 1934 – July 3, 2017) was a Mexican artist, writer, draftsman, engraver, illustrator, and printmaker. He was one of the first to challenge the then dominant Mexican muralism movement as a prominent member of the Generación de la Ruptura (English: Breakaway Generation). He was a mostly self-taught artist, whose styles and influences are moored to the darker side of life, often depicting distorted figures and the debasement of humanity.Cuevas was born in Mexico City in 1934. He began drawing at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already exhibiting his work. In 1953, he had his first solo exhibition at the Galería Prisse in Mexico City. This exhibition was a success, and it helped to launch Cuevas' career.Cuevas' work is characterized by its dark and satirical humor. He often depicts the human body in a distorted and grotesque way, and his work often deals with themes of violence, sex, and death. Cuevas' work has been controversial, but it has also been praised for its originality and its social commentary.Cuevas has exhibited his work all over the world, and his work is included in the collections of many major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London. He was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 2003.Cuevas died in Mexico City in 2017 at the age of 83. He is considered one of the most important Mexican artists of the 20th century.
