After all, during the late 1940s, an era when color film had become readily available, there were still eight city and interurban systems carrying passengers in Iowa, as well as several other roads that relied on electric power to move freight. Surprisingly, five of the passenger systems operated into the 1950s, and the last one didn't exit the passenger business until 1958. In addition, being centrally located, Iowa was close to several mid-western population centers, and a fine network of passenger rail lines made the state readily accessible to those who wanted to shoot color film on Iowa's trolleys. Most photographers seemed to concentrate first on the state's more interesting interurban lines, a classic throwback to an earlier era, before moving on to the few remaining city systems. Thus color views of the interurban lines, both passenger and the big money maker, freight service, are more plentiful than scenes of the city lines. This heavy reliance on freight traffic led to a situation that was somewhat unique to the Hawkeye State. The interurbans made their money moving freight, and passenger service was minimal at best. Since passenger fleets were small and just adequate for their owners limited needs, we sometimes see multiple scenes featuring the same car, albeit in different locations. It's not because a few cars were regularly photographed, but simply because only a few cars were available to photograph. Fortunately, the camera gives us a wide ranging look across different sections of the various systems, even though the same cars may appear more than once. All pictures are of the actual item.
