Description: Incredibly rare, one of a kind portrait of Ignacy Jan Paderewski, by George Timothy Tobin, signed by Paderewski specifically for J.H. Johnston at a Lotos Club dinner, circa 1902. He produced illustrations for magazines like Harper's Bazaar (cover, December 1906), The Century, Publishers Weekly, and St. Nicholas. He illustrated children's books by authors such as Ruth Ogden and Charles Dickens. He produced a series of drawings of American presidents and other notables like critic Hamilton Wright Mabie.Tobin worked in watercolor, ink, pencil, pastel, and (later) drypoint etching. His work is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Museum of American Illustration, the Fogg Art Museum, and the New York Public Library.J.H. Johnston was a prominent Whitmanaut and very successful Manhattan jewler. (1837 - 1919) Mr. Johnston had a wide circle of important friends, in many walks of life, including Walt Whitman and Theodore Roosevelt (see pictures for material on this). He was a member of many prominent private social clubs, including The Lotos Club, The Salmangundi Club, The Liberal Club, The Thirteen Club, the Brooklyn Writiers Club, and the Walt Whitman Fellowship. He was also a 32nd degree Mason.
