IMPORTANT TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY 31ST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HERBERT HOOVER TO MANHATTAN PROJECT DIRECTOR LESLIE R. GROVES FORWARDING HIS ENDORSEMENT OF DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER FOR PRESIDENT AND RICHARD NIXON FOR VICE PRESIDENT IN 1952 Hoover sends to Groves his endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower and his running mate Richard Nixon in the 1952 election: “I thought you might be interested in an advance release of the speech I have been asked by General Eisenhower to make on Saturday evening, October 18.” On October 18, 1852, Herbert Hoover delivered an address on radio and television entitled “The Constructive Character of the Republican Party.” He began his address to, “My Fellow Americans,” by declaring, “I have tonight come out of what I had hoped was final retirement from political activities...because I believe General Eisenhower and the Republican ticket should be elected.” He specifically spoke to the generation of voters who had come of age in the 1930s and 1940s and had never known the era of “Republican prosperity.” He criticized Franklin D. Roosevelt before closing his comments with a brief mention of Republican candidates Eisenhower and Nixon.
