Description: HENRY CLAY FRICK: THE MAN, by George Harvey, chronicles the life of Henry Clay Frick, industrialist, financier, and one of America’s most prominent art collectors. Privately Printed, 1936. The Frick Collection: New York. Octavo. Fully bound in Burgundy Textured Cloth with Gilt Lettering Stamped to Spine. Portrait Frontispiece. Deckled Fore Edge. 382 pp. A very good copy of this hard-to-find title, with minor edge wear to the beautiful cloth-bound boards as well as toning to the top and bottom edges of the text block; else fine. Pristine interior with clean, crisp pages. NO previous owner names or bookplates. NOT ex-library. NO writing. Comes in a good dust jacket with minor wear to edges and corners along with toning and fading on the front panel, else great. Now protected in archival mylar to preserve its state. THE MAN delves into Frick’s rise to wealth through the steel and coke industries, his partnership with Andrew Carnegie (Frick served as chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company), and his lasting legacy as a philanthropist and founder of The Frick Collection, a renowned art museum in New York. On a dramatic note, Frick was shot and stabbed by Alexander Berkman, an anarchist, over Frick's role in the dispute during the Homestead (Pennsylvania) steel strike of 1892, but survived, continuing to grow his massive fortune, which was valued at more than 200 million, until his death in 1919. George Harvey (1864–1928) was a journalist, diplomat, and editor who worked for HARPER's, among other publications, and maintained close connections with prominent industrialists and political figures of the time. A very cool book on a titan of Gilded Age New York.
