Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Great Western Railway Locomotive Allocations for 1934 Great Western Railway Locomotive Allocations For 1934 By Rev Nigel Pocock And Ian Harrison Softbound 56 Pages Copyright 1987 INTRODUCTION The locomotive allocations given in this book are taken from the original Great Western Railway locomotive registers, now kept in the Public Record Office at Kew. These registers record the allocation of each engine at 1st January, together with subsequent allocations at the end of thirteen 'four week' periods through the year. However, the movement of locomotives between sheds would clearly have occurred at any time throughout each four week period, and the actual transfer dates are often noted in the 1934 register. For instance, loco No. 216 is shown as moving to Swindon F. Pool from Banbury on 6th February 1934, whilst the four week period during which this occurred did not end until 10th February. The dates at the end of each period were: 13th January, 10th February, 10th March, 7th April, 5th May, 2nd June, 30th June, 28th July, 25th August, 22nd September, 20th October, 17th November and 15th December. This book forms a companion to the Locomotive Allocations for 1921 (also published by Wild Swan Publications) which showed the situation just prior to the Grouping, when the many smaller railway companies in South Wales were absorbed. This volume for 1934 gives allocations from the middle of the Grouping period, and reflects a particularly interesting time, when some locomotives of the older Dean and Armstrong classes, such as the '517' and 'Barnum' classes, still remained, alongside the more modern Collett locomotives. A number of the steam railmotors were also still in service. Within a short period, many of these older types had been swept away, replaced by further 'Halls', 'Granges' and modern classes of pannier tank, etc. The locomotive shed names in the 1934 register also show some changes from the 1921 designations. For example, Old Oak Common (or 0.0.C.) was previously termed Paddington in the 1921 register. The 1934 register also distinguishes between locomotives in the works and those at the running shed for each repairing depot: Bath Road, Bristol; Barry; Ebbw Junction, Newport; Newton Abbot; Oswestry; Stafford Road, Wolverhampton; Swindon; and Tyseley, whilst the 1921 register only gives this information separately for Swindon. It has therefore been possible to give a complete list of those locomotives in the works on 1st January 1934, together with those which were stored out of use. One of the appendices also deals with those locomotives which were held at their home sheds awaiting a visit to the works. The GWR registers record the allocation for each locomotive, but do not provide lists of engines stabled at each shed. As such information is of great interest to railway historians and modellers, the date from the register has been sorted to produce shed by shed allocations. These should be taken as a guide to typical locomotive stocks at each shed, rather than an absolute statement of the engines working from a given shed on, say, 1st January 1934. For example, it is well known that the engines working on some branch lines were regularly exchanged with similar locos from the parent shed, often on a weekly basis. The 1934 register also gives details of the tenders paired with each tender locomotive. This information is reproduced in an appendix, and should prove invaluable for locomotive students and modellers. The photographs have been chosen to represent the period and in many cases it has been possible to find views of locomotives at the sheds to which they were allocated on 1st January 1934. As with the companion volume, the emphasis has again been given to showing the smaller and less prestigious engines, rather than the express locos which are more often featured in publications.
