Description: The 2001 French 50 cent coin is unique due to its release on the eve of the introduction of the euro on January 1, 2002. From this day on, euro banknotes and coins came into circulation, becoming the new currency for the 12 countries of the European Monetary Union. Two months later, the euro became the only legal tender in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Finland and France. The obverse of the coin depicts a girl sower, created in 1897 by artist Luis Oscar Roti. On the right are vertical stripes with the initials RF (République Française) and the artist’s signature, on the left is the year of issue. Around the circle are the stars of the European Union. On the reverse is the denomination “50 EURO CENT” and a map of Europe, symbolizing the unity of the European Union, with six parallel lines and stars. The coin is made of Nordic gold, which gives it a golden hue and is resistant to corrosion. It has historical and artistic value, which makes it desirable in collections.
