Supported by the Russian czars since Peter the Great’s daughter Empress Elizabeth, the factory produced wares almost exclusively for the ruling Romanov family and the Russian Imperial court, and for political and diplomatic gifts to be given by them. Its best-known pattern, cobalt net, first appeared in 1949. The design is based on a blue net pattern that was painted on raised lines cast into the porcelain dinnerware pieces of Catherine the Great. The factory has actual examples of Catherine's dinnerware with this design. The new design pattern is a combination of intersecting lines of cobalt blue with inverted tear drops of cobalt blue (made from mineral cobalt) and 22 karat gold accents. America gains access in Post-Soviet era In 1993, after the breakup of the USSR, exports of Lomonosov porcelain began to the United States and Japan. In 2002, LFZ was privatized, and in 2005, the stockholders of Lomonosov Porcelain Factory passed a resolution to return to their pre-Soviet name, the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory. Dating the pieces 1993 - 2002: the first post-Soviet export backstamp (maker’s mark) was a red LFZ monogram, with "Made in Russia" stamped in red. 2002 - 2005: a new export mark was used, which featured a red or blue LFZ monogram along with the words "Hand Decorated, 1744, St. Petersburg, Russia.” Post-2005 pieces are stamped in black or blue “Imperial Porcelain, 1744, St. Petersburg,” along with a double-headed imperial eagle.
