Description: Abbotsbury Swannery is the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world. It is situated near the village of Abbotsbury in Dorset, England, 14 kilometres (9 mi) west of Weymouth on a 1-hectare (2-acre) site around the Fleet Lagoon protected from the weather of Lyme Bay by Chesil Beach. The colony can number over 600 swans with around 150 pairs. Written records of the swannery's existence go back to 1393, though it probably existed well before that and is believed to have been set up by Benedictine monks in the eleventh century.Subformat EnvelopeType First Day Cover Title SwansSeries 600th Anniversary of Abbotsbury SwanneryIssued 1993-01-19 Country United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern IrelandFormat StampQueen Elizabeth II since 1952Series 600th Anniversary of Abbotsbury SwanneryIssued on 1993-01-19Stamp 30 x 41 mmDesigner David GentlemanPrinter Harrison & Sons Ltd.Color MulticolorEmission CommemorativePerforation comb 14¼ x 14¾Paper 1 phosphor band, Phosphor paperPrinting PhotogravureFace value in British penny 18 p Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), St. Catherine's ChapelMichel GB 1426, Stanley Gibbons GB 1639 (print run: 25,239,900) 24 p Juvenile Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), Duck TrapMichel GB 1427, Stanley Gibbons GB 1640 (print run: 27,256,700) 28 p Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)Michel GB 1428, Stanley Gibbons GB 1641 (print run: 5,186,200) 33 p Eggs in Nest, Tithe Barn - AbbotsburyMichel GB 1429, Stanley Gibbons GB 1642 (print run: 5,299,600) 39 p Young Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)Michel GB 1430, Stanley Gibbons GB 1643 (print run: )
