Description: Far to the south, in the little, little town of St. Martinville, Louisiana, there is a statue of Evangeline in the old Acadian Churchyard of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. Local Legend has it that Longfellow's prototypes for Evangeline and Gabriel were the real life Acadians Emmeline Labiche and Louis Arceneaux. It is said that when Emmeline and Louis were separated during the deportation in 1755 in Nova Scotia, Emmeline wandered far and wide searching for her Louis. She finally found him in St. Martinville, under the shade of the famous Evangeline oak tree. Louis, sadly, told her that he had lost hope of ever seeing her again and had married and married another. In 1929 a silent movie was made of Evangeline. Crews from Hollywood invaded the St. Martinville area with sets, cameras, costumes, and actors. The title role of Evangeline was played by the beautiful Mexican actress, Dolores Del Rio. Later, she and her studio, United Artists, gave a statue of Evangeline, for which she posed, to the city. The monument stands as a memorial to Evangeline and all Acadians.
