Description: This is a rare January 25th, 1873 program for a performance of Mr. EDWIN BOOTH in the John Howard Payne tragedy "BRUTUS" (or "The Fall of Tarquin") at Booth's Theatre in New York City. (This was Edwin Booth's first performance in the role in six years.) ..... The play starred Mr. EDWIN BOOTH in the title role, Mr. C. R. THORNE, Jr. as "Titus", Mr. JAMES J. BARTLETT as "Collitinus", Mr. GEORGE BECKS as "Claudius", Miss BELLA PATEMAN as "Tarquina" and Miss MARY WELLS as "Pullia" and featured Mr. JAMES STARK, Mr. NELSON DECKER, Mr. A. W. FENNO, Mr. S. W. GLENN, Mr. J. P. DEUEL, Mr. GEORGE H. HARRIS, Mr. F. PERCY, Mr. CHARLES ROSENE, Mr. EUGENE ELBERTS, Mr. J. R. DAVIS, Mr. HENRY HOGAN, Mr. T. F. BRENNAN, Miss MARY YOUNG and Miss ELLEN LIVINGSTON ..... Side note: Edwin Booth built the elaborate Booth's Theatre in 1868 after a fire damaged the Winter Garden Theatre which he had been managing. The first production was "Romeo and Juliet", which opened on February 3rd, 1869 with Booth starring opposite Mary McVicker. The theater never became profitable or even a stable financial venture and the "Panic of 1873" resulted in the theater's bankruptcy and closure the following year. Following the bankruptcy, Booth went on a worldwide tour, eventually regaining his fortune ..... DETAILS: The oversized four page program measures 11 1/8" X 15" inches and includes beautiful cover graphics, production and cast credits and a list of upcoming engagements as well as promotional text and wonderful vintage advertising ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) there is a crescent shaped puncture in the top and bottom of all four pages, moderate creasing and a 1 1/4" inch tear in the right side of a fold across the middle. Despite these flaws, this rare program will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
