Description: Early Yakama fully beaded crown, with spread-winged American eagle above a red, white, and blue stars and stripes shield; horse head to the left; wild cat head (baring its teeth) to the right. Above the eagle is "QUEEN"; between the shield and horse head is "TOPP". The background is yellow beads, outlined with blue beads, and handstitched to soft leather backing, with soft leather tying straps."TOPP", we believe, is an abbreviation for Toppenish - town in central Washington State that is located within the Yakama Reservation and home of the Yakama Nation Museum and Cultural Heritage Center. The wildcat is the mascot of Toppenish High School. The Toppenish Powwow and Rodeo started in 1922, an event for which a queen was crowned. Although the history of this crown has been lost in time, the material, workmanship, and symbolism suggests this crown dates to the early days of this powwow and rodeo. The Yakama people acquired horses in the 1700s and thousands of wild horses roam their reservation in central Washington. The beaded part of the crown is 18 inches long and 5 inches top to bottom at the highest point above the eagle, with 17 inch straps. This crown shows some wear, consistent with its age and use; there is some bead loss above the horse head (see pictures). This is a unique and artistic piece of Yakama beadwork.NOTE: - This beaded crown will be shipped flat, carefully padded and cushioned. - See other ethnographic and cultural art, now in our ebay store. We are dedicated to providing customer service.
