The embroidery designs selected as representing colonial years were chosen from apparel, household linens, bed hangings, curtains, screens, fur. niture coverings, and other "stuffs" in contemporary use. They are all illustrated in three broad sections: bed furnishings, apparel and acces-sories, and pictorial needlework. Deeply immersed in traditional approaches, the book stresses the development of design in the needle arts rather than the techniques or materials used. Early American embroidery patterns fall into two major groups: adaptations from designs originating in Europe--these were very popular--and original designs created by individual needlewomen. When local needlewomen worked design ideas from abroad, they would add their own touches of local flora or fauna, or might often "expand" the design. Thus, they would not be criticized by fashion-conscious neighbors. Design motifs hav. ing their roots in the land itself were drawn by very imaginative needlewomen, whose creative impulses were not satisfied with the conventional patterns then in vogue. They were women who were never very far away from nature and the open country, and one can see wild game, flowers, and birds taking an important place in their embroid-eries." All these designs with their distinctive patterns are illustrated here. Embroiderers today, during a period when so much emphasis is placed on colonial decoration, can use these motifs to make their individual contributions to the art of embroid-ery. For the collector this volume is truly a treas-ury-a guide to the most desirable embroidery pieces of the colonial period." Condition: Book is VERY GOOD / FINE with light cover/corner/edge wear.
