Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Sarah Ashford - 1808. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with the following verse with a tied floral swag around the first stanza and finishing with Sarah's name and the date of September 28th 1803 which has a diamond, crown and floral motif to both sides Love is the strongest tie that can our hearts uniteLove makes our service liberty, our ev'ry burden lightWe run in God's commands when love directs the wayWith willing heart and active hands our makes will obeySarah AshfordSep'b 28 1808 The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central bell flower motif with a tree, diamond and fruit basket to its left and right, then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some light, speckled staining and a few small areas of damage. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later, similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also a small amount of thinning to the black stitch work of Sarah's surname and very minor bleeding to the other black stitch work. The sampler is contained within a late 19th/early 20th century Hogarth style frame which is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a few small losses to the outer gilt detailing. Measures 11" x 13" (sight size) and 13" x 15" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
