Description: 1987 romantic drama Good Morning Babylon starring Desiree Becker, Joaquim de Almeida, Greta Scacchi, Vincent Spano and Charles Dance and directed by Vincent and Vittorio Taviani. The Story: Following the bankruptcy of their father's stone-masonry firm in Italy, brothers Nicola and Andrea emigrate to America seeking their fortunes. After many adventures and near-disasters, they end up in Hollywood designing sets for pioneering film director D. W. Griffith. Both marry beautiful actresses. But tragedy strikes with the arrival of World War I, which finds the brothers fighting on opposite sides of the conflict. Comments: This film works as a fairy tale - an odd combination of romance, comedy and tragedy. On one level, the simplistic story is a metaphor for the destruction of war. The story fictionalizes the making of D. W. Griffith's anti-war film Intolerance - Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages, using actual footage from that film. The death of the brothers at the end is a surrealistic montage of battle with an image of the Pisa Cathedral in the background. On a lighter level, the film is a delightful story of two imaginative and ambitious brothers who achieve an impossible dream. The vivid settings are historically interesting, from the restoration of one of Italy's finest cathedrals to the depiction of film making in early Hollywood. The film is presented in widescreen format, with English audio and no optional subtitles. The "Italian" segments of the film (building the cathedral, final war segment) have Italian audio with forced English subtitles.
