Description: RARE! The Sacramento Bee newspaper flange-style sign. And who do you think designed the bee logo drawing? Walt Disney, himself !! It was the only time Disney ever allowed a Disney-created character to "work" at a non-Disney company. The bee was named "Scoopy." Eleanor McClatchy --- who was President of McClatchy Newspapers from 1936-1978 -- had asked Walt Disney if he would draw some logos for her company "to lend some personality and an identity" to the McClatchy newspaper organization. Walt agreed to make an exception for her IF she would donate $1,500 to the Army Relief Fund (this was during WWII). She did, and Scoopy has remained their logo ever since. He definitely has the old Disney cartoon animation style which was a little less cute, and very recognizable. "Scoopy" is flying and holding aloft a newspaper which says "The Sacramento B" (with the "B" in the old Disneyland sign font-style on the face of the newspaper) in one hand and a stack of newspapers in his classic Disney-style cartoon character 4-fingered hand in the other. You can see Walt Disney's classic swirly signature on the logo. This is a very cool sign, especially having Walt Disney's signature on it. The condition of the sign can be seen in the photographs. It's rusty, it's banged up, weathered, faded, chipped, and on one side of the sign Scoopy has almost entirely rusted away. The sign has seen decades of California and American history come and go. The flange newspaper signs were especially popular in the 1940s and 1950s, which is when I think this sign was made. It would look great framed or nailed in a garage or man cave or study. It is for people who love the days of when everybody read a newspaper and every boy had a newspaper route at one point or another, and for people who would like a rare piece of Disney memorabilia. SIZE: 19-3/4 inches LONG x 7 inches TALL (19-3/4"x7"). I've also included pictures of articles from The Sacramento Bee talking about Walt Disney and "Scoopy". These are for reference only, and not part of the auction. The Sacramento Bee is the flagship newspaper of The McClatchy Company. The newspaper was founded in 1857 and continues to provide its loyal readers daily news to this very day.
