Although the opening shots of the American Civil War (1861-1865) were located in Charleston, South Carolina, 267 Civil War battles were fought on the soil of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Next in number of battles was Tennessee, with 69.This battlefield map of Northern Virginia contains a blowup of the locations of battles fought in Alexandria, adjacent to the National Capital of the Union. Not shown are the sites of raids by {John Singleton] Mosby's Rangers, who as a group often raided sutler wagons and greatly upset the supply chain between 1863 AND 1865.A day prior to the First Manassas (First Battle of Bull Run), a battle was fought at Blackburn's Ford, where a Confederate brigade encountered a Union brigade that was attempting an end run to fortify the encampment at Bull Run. The Union brigade was defeated but stragglers managed to reach Bull Run just in time for the actual battle, but the Union forces were soundly defeated and retreated east to Fairfax County, adjacent to the battlefield. Bull Run is a waterway that borders both Fairfax and Prince William Counties. This map shows marked and unmarked sites of various Civil War encounters and most have historical markers, marked by red stars. Major roads to access the battlefields and visitor centers are shown. I am now long over 80, and these souvenirs are more of a burden than a memento. I need to downsize before my heirs have to do it for me.
