Description: General Fitz-John Porter commanded the 5th Army Corp during the 8162 Peninsula Campaign, was promoted for gallantry at the Battle of the Chickahominy River, Richmond, Virginia and at 2nd Manassas, and with distinction at the Battles of Antietam and Sheperdstown. Following the latter battle Radicals in Congress engineered his arrest, blaming him for General John Pope's defeat at 2nd Manassas, charging that he had refused to obey Pope" order to attack Stonewall Jackson's flank. He was later exonorated after it was learned that he had received intel that Longstreet's corp was poised to crush the Union forces, using Jackson as bait, and was eventually restored to duty and credited with saving Pope's Army from destruction. Postwar Confederate General EP Alexander cites Porter's courage and judgement stated that Porter's dismissal was on of the "greatest fruits of the Confederate Victory at 2nd Manassas". Porter was fully exonorated in 1886 after a special military commission reviewed his dismissal and concluded that his action at Manassas probably saved Pope"s Army of Virginia. An Original 1892 Letter from General Porter at Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois to General Henry Larcom L Abbott (noted US Army artillery & engineering officer) thanking him for his kind letter. 1p 6 x 10" ptd/ink with large litho ills of The Hyde Park Hotel Chicago.
