About Lotton Art Glass (from Lotton's website) Charles Lotton, with his sons David, Daniel, and John, his grandson Robert Lagestee, and studio artist Scott Bayless, create hand blown, one of a kind works of fine glass art. Lotton's business began in 1970 with prayers and dreams when Charles began teaching himself the art of glassblowing in his backyard. The chemistry of Charles' glass is unique to Lotton Glass. Lotton Art Glass is one of the very few studios in the world to start with elements of the earth like sand, soda ash, lime, borax, zinc and metals resulting in some of the most breathtaking colors that you will ever see. Each artist has found his own style, or niche, you might say, that produces some of the finest glass made in the world today. Charles, David, John, and Daniel's creations permanently grace hundreds of museums as well as private collections. Their collectors have followed them through 50 years of glassmaking, watching the incredible progression of design in their work. About Charles Lotton Charles was born in a one-room cabin in Elizabethtown, Illinois in 1935. After high school, he joined the Air Force and worked as a trouble shooter for bombing and navigational equipment. Upon completion of Air Force duty, Charles moved to Chicago where he met his wife, Mary, on the beach and married her six months later. They had four children. In 1961, Charles and Mary opened a hair salon in Dolton, IL. endeavors. In May of 1970, Charles went to The Art Institute and spent the day there to watch glass blowing. He came home that day and told his wife that he was going to be a glass blower and started building a furnace in the back yard. In November of the same year, he started what would become a 51-year career in the world of glass blowing. By 1972, Charles met up with the Tiffany expert Lillian Nassau. She saw talent and bought all of Charles' glass for the first five years. This arrangement enabled him to transition from the hair salon into the world of art glass. Charles is world-renowned for the most beautiful designs in art, like the 'Multi Flora' and 'Cypriot' styles. These trademark designs have put him into hundreds of major museums and private collections. 60E
