About Charles Edmund Richardson:Charles Edmund Richardson was born on October 13, 1858, in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah. He faced numerous illnesses as an infant, including diphtheria, whooping cough, and brain fever. Despite these challenges, he survived, thanks in part to the care of his family and the intervention of a local religious figure, Father Morley. His early life was marked by hardships, including his family's move to Springville, Utah County, where he developed his earliest memories. Charles's mother, Mary Richardson, played a significant role in his upbringing, particularly in his education and work ethic. She was a skilled weaver, and Charles recalled the sound of her loom as a constant presence in his childhood. His mother’s dedication to her craft and her willingness to teach others left a lasting impression on Charles. Charles was a curious and intelligent child, known for his precocity in school. He had a natural talent for learning and a keen interest in everything around him, particularly machinery. His early education was nurtured by his mother, who encouraged his reading habits, even though his interests initially leaned towards adventure stories rather than biographies or history. As a young man, Charles experienced several near-death incidents, including being nearly trampled by oxen and almost drowning in a tannery vat. These events, along with his strong sense of duty and responsibility, shaped his character. After the death of his parents, Charles took on the responsibility of supporting his younger brother, Sullie, while continuing his education and working various jobs, including mining and assaying. Charles's life was a testament to resilience and determination, as he overcame early health challenges and family losses to become a responsible and skilled individual. His story reflects the hardships and perseverance of pioneer life in the American West. A Book Review:5/5 stars - Family/cultural history of a Mormon pioneer + info on the Mormon colonies in Mexico 1888-1910This was written and compiled by Annie Richardson Johnson (1889-1982) his oldest daughter by his third wife Caroline Rebecca Jacobson and her sister Elva Richardson Shumway. Published in 1982 just before the authors passing at 92 years of age. She gathered information and did interviews for many decades and finally published this 1060 page tome using funds from her earlier history of her home town in Chihuahua, Mexico "Heartbeats of Colonia Diaz" which was destroyed after evacuation during the 1910 revolution. Edmund had 36 children through his four wives and now has more than 3000 living descendants of whom I am one. Both her books are considered useful as ethnographic resources and have an entertaining prose style and lots of well documented history and perceptions unique to a daughter of polygamy. Faith promoting by intention but not overbearingly so they are full of human interest of individuals and families and a whole mode of living that has disappeared. Those with a genuine love of history or a wish to see inside Mormon culture will benefit....--Chad Manderscheid ATTN OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS: BECAUSE EBAY INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING ONLY INSURES UP TO $100, THIS BOOK CAN ONLY BE MAILED DIRECTLY TO CUSTOMERS WITHIN THE UNITED STATES.
