Description: Cassell’s Illustrated Edition of Charles and Mary Cowden Clarke’s Annotated Shakespeare, in three volumes: Comedies, Historical Plays, and Tragedies by William Shakespeare. They are illustrated by Henry Courtney Selous and were published in London by Cassell, Peter, and Galpin. No date of publication, though circa 1864 (Cassell Petter & Galpin existed in this configuration from 1858 to 1878). Bound in leather on spine and corners, marbled boards. Gilt stamped lettering on spine. Raised spine bands create six compartments on each spine. Leather is rubbed and scuffed, with a stain and missing label to volume 1 spine. Wear at corners, edges, and spine ends. There is very little foxing in volume 1, a little light scattered foxing to front leaves of volume 2, and moderate on front and end pages of volume 3. Green paper front end paper detached in volume 1. Strong, tight bindings, crisp leaves with some coloring. Beautiful illustrations throughout by Henry Courtney Selous.
