Provenance to Xmas 1904, first owner a famous publisher. The Lot includes two books from London’s personal book collection plus original owner of Call of the Wild’s own first publication. THELOT- $4,000. THECALL OF THE WILD, the MacMillan Company, published July, 1903, first edition, first printing, 231 pages, color images. Cover color smudged, otherwise very good condition. Original owner was Hugh Massey Clark, as noted by bookplate on inside cover, with writing “Xmas 1904”. Clark, 1896-1956, was the publisher and owner of the annual Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue, which began in 1867. He first edited and published the 1935 catalogue. A copy of that is included in this book lot. He was highly honored by the profession, and in 1957 posthumously received the American Philatellic Society APS Hall of Fame award. Following his death in Los Angeles and estate proceedings, his Call of the Wild entered the book market. This Call of the Wild was obtained for me , at age 10, April 8, 1960, from Yale & Brown Booksellers, Pasadena, CA. Copy of the original receipt is included with photos. I have had the book it since then. The smudging on the cover occurred when I took it to my fifth-grade class for “show and tell”. At or about the same time, I also acquired two books from London’s personal collection. BREAKINGTHE WILDERNESS, by Frederick S. Dellenbaugh, G.P. Putnam & Sons, 1905, 360pages including numerous illustrations and photos, from Jack London’s personal book collection, excellent condition. Believed to be first edition. London liked books by adventurers and explorers, as shown by two books in this Lot. Frederick S. Dellenbaugh, 1853-1935, was an American explorer who served on Maj. John Wesley Powell’s second expedition down the Colorado River, 1871-1873. His later expeditions included the discovery of the last unknown river in the U.S., the Escalante. It provides a comprehensive review, illustrations and early photos of the American West, its explorers, wildlife and native inhabitants. Sixteen chapters. London’s personal bookplate (his name, wolf head and snowshoes) is on the inside cover. The same wolf image is now commonly used on Kenwood Vineyard wine bottles. The book has a small sticker inside the back cover stating “SMITH BROS. Stationery, Pictures, 462-464 13th St. Oakland, Cal.” London was living in that area in 1905 and 1906, and likely purchased the book at that time from that store. Smith Bros. was heavily damaged in the April 18, 1906,earthquake, as shown in numerous photos online. It is doubtful it reopened. I have had it since 1960. Handwritten note inside front cover notes this as first edition”. Published 1905, preface dated Dec. 7,1904. FARTHESTNORTH, by Fridtjof Nansen, Harper & Brothers, 1898, Popular one volume edition, 679 pages with some photos, from Jack London’s personal book collection, good condition. London’s wolf head bookplate on first page inside cover. “Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship ‘Fram’ 1896-96 and of a Fifteen Months’ Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen.” Nansen, a Norwegian, 1861-1930, was the 1922 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his leading humanitarian role in repatriation of 400,000 prisoners between Russia, Germany, and the former Austria-Hungary after World War I. Earlier in life he was a leading arctic explorer on Fram, and was stranded on the pole’s ice for 15 months. This book from, London’s personal collection ,chronicles this these adventures from1893- 1896. I have had the book since 1960. STANDARDPOSTAGE & STAMP CATALOGUE, edited by John N. Luff and Hugh M. Clark, 1935Ninety-first Edition, Scott Stamp & Coin Company, 1055 pages plus, fair condition (separated and taped cover from first page). This is offered as part of the Lot to show the first of many publications by Hugh M. Clark, who was the first owner of The Call of the Wild offered with this Lot. These need to be in the hands of a serious collector, not me. It is time to pass them on.
