Description: Additional Information from Movie Mars Product Description Personnel: Bobby Guyer (vocals, trumpet); Bill Gemmer (trombone); Dee Felice (drums). Liner Note Authors: Frank Powers; George H. Buck, Jr. Recording information: Lausche Recording Studio, Cincinnati, OH (1985). Bobby Guyer was an underrated trumpeter who during the swing era played with the big bands of Bobby Byrne, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and Hal McIntyre. In the 1950s, Guyer settled in the Midwest, playing in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky fairly regularly until his death in 1988. In 1985, he had the only opportunity of his life to lead a record date. He gathered together a sextet of associates that included one fairly well-known player (the great stride pianist Ted des Plantes) and other lesser-known talents (trombonist Bill Gemmer, clarinetist Paul Thatcher, bassist Tom Cahall, and drummer Dee Felice) to jam eight Dixieland standards and his own "Bobby's Blues." The frameworks of the potential warhorses, which include "Who's Sorry Now," "Back in Your Own Backyard," and "Struttin' with Some Barbeque," are consistently inventive, keeping the music slightly unpredictable. The forceful stride pianist des Plantes is easily the most impressive soloist, while clarinetist Thatcher is fluid and trombonist Gemmer (showcased on "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans") displays a wide range and a warm sound. In his 60s at the time, Guyer shows off a lyrical sound, a gentle approach, and a melodic style. He does not dominate the solo space, and, other than his vocal on "You Can Depend on Me" (which is relaxed à la Jack Teagarden), is not extensively featured. Although one wishes that Bobby Guyer had been a little less modest in showcasing his own playing, his lone date as a leader (available on CD) is worth acquiring by Dixieland collectors. ~ Scott Yanow About Movie Mars All items are Brand New.
