Description: Original lead bullets and artifacts excavated from the Civil War Battlefields near Fredericksburg, Virginia. They would be the same type equipment and ammunition used during the Battle of Gettysburg. At center is a pocket knife. The Federal “Eagle” button with the “I” in the shield was worn by an officer in the Infantry, the flat button worn on Confederate uniforms. The other artifacts include a kepi buckle, percussion caps and a rifle sling adjuster. The lead bullets are a three ring Federal .58 Springfield and a fired Confederate .58 Gardner made at the Richmond Arsenal in Virginia.. The bullets used a paper cartridge which has not survived in the ground. The white color or patina is due to oxidation in the ground. The scene was reprinted from a photograph taken at Gettysburg days after the battle there in July of 1863. The photograph shows three Confederate prisoners on Seminary Ridge, on or about July 15, 1863, with the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the background. The photograph was taken by Mathew Brady. At the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, Major General George Meade's “Army of the Potomac” defeated attacks by General Robert E. Lee's “Army of Northern Virginia”, halting Lee's invasion of the North and forcing his retreat. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point, due to the Union's decisive victory. The battle was fought July 1st through July 3rd, 1863. The artifacts come with an 8” x 12” riker mount box as shown. We are packing the artifacts separately so they don’t scratch the glass. The black felt behind the artifacts in the picture is over soft cotton batting which allows the relic to settle into it and allows for the different thicknesses. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid. You can place the relics however you like. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and the listed description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also be included. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
