On their return flight these pilots were shot down over Nazi occupied Yugoslavia territory. Serbian General Mihailovich rescued over 500 of these flyers, hiding them, feeding them, caring for the wounded and participated in SECRET flights several times a week out of Bari, Italy. These planes landed in open fields lit by torches saving a dozen pilots at a time. When the war ended, Tito arrested Gen. Mihailovich accusing him of being a Nazi spy and held an infamous Communist show trial in which Mihailovich was found guilty and killed by Tito's Communist firing squad. After his death, President Truman gave Mihailovich the Legion of Merit award, the highest recognition given to a foreign individual. There are thousands of children alive today in the United States born by these rescued pilots. Many American families sing the praises of the Serbians who rescued their sons, brothers and fathers.
